April 30, 2004: Tampa, Florida Worker killed trying to clear clogged wood chipper Sheriff's Office Names Wood Chipper VictimHillsborough County sheriff's deputies on Friday identified the tree service employee killed in a wood chipper Thursday afternoon as Gordon McKay, 51, of West Woodlawn Avenue. McKay worked for Albury Tree Service of Tampa and was helping clear brush on Rowan Lane in the Lake Ellen Woods subdivision off Fletcher Avenue when the accident occurred, deputies said. Shortly before 5 p.m., McKay got up onto a jammed wood chipper as it ran. Witnesses said he tried to kick at the jammed limbs and the chipper caught his foot and pulled him in. He was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said. The investigation is continuing, deputies said, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also is conducting an investigation. | |
